WHAT IS IT?___
GenMDM is a music interface for your SEGA Genesis or Mega Drive console.

Use GenMDM to write sweet chiptunes using your favourite MIDI / audio sequencing software. GenMDM will appear as a MIDI output device on your Windows, Mac or Linux-based computer. GenMDM will respond to MIDI notes and MIDI CC data, and will give you a high degree of real time control over the sound chips inside of the SEGA console.

All voices and sound functions of the standard SEGA FM and PSG sound chips can be controlled via MIDI. There is a small FAQ in this thread on chipmusic.org. You might be interested in reading it.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?___
GenMDM is currently not available.

Note that the first round of preorders closed on Wednesday, 18th April, 2012 at midnight (ACST).

WHEN WILL I GET MY GENMDM?___
GenMDM printed circuit boards are currently being produced. It is expected that the first batch of GenMDM units will ship on or before Thursday, 17th May, 2012.

WELL, WHAT DOES IT SOUND LIKE?___
Basically, music written using the GenMDM will sound like a SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive, of course! However, it is possible to get a wider variety of sounds out of the console than many of the "classic" SEGA sound tracks.

• "I Am Still Breathing" on Pause by little-scale was written entirely with the GenMDM interface and a SEGA Mega Drive 1 console.

• "Loom" by dot.AY and little-scale was written entirely with the GenMDM interface, and features eight SEGA Mega Drives controlled via two computers (for a total of 80 chiptune hardware channels).

• Lazerbeat has written a number of tracks for the WeeklyBeats project such as "Megadub" and "Tripdrive" that have been created using the GenMDM interface.

• Abortifacient has written the track "Murky As" using the GenMDM interface.

• Dot.AY has used the GenMDM interface (alongside other sounds) in a number of his recent remixes for the WeeklyBeats project, such as "Megadrive Riddum" and "The Sun Sets Over A Bad Day".
